Dilemmas Conversation Club
Engaging students in meaningful discussions about dilemmas and ethical decision-making.
Objective
Students explore different types of dilemmas, discuss their experiences, and practice giving and receiving advice in a conversational setting.
Procedure
Warm-Up: Ask students to define a dilemma and share any personal experiences where they faced a difficult decision.
- Discussion Questions:
- What kinds of dilemmas can you think of?
- Have you ever been in a dilemma? How did it feel? What was the outcome?
- Who do you turn to for advice in difficult situations?
- Do you often find yourself in dilemmas, serious or otherwise?
- Ethical Scenarios:
- Hand out flashcards with different moral or ethical dilemmas.
- Students take turns reading them aloud and discussing possible solutions.
- Role-Playing Activity:
- In pairs or small groups, students act out a dilemma scenario and present different ways to handle it.
- Advice-Giving Exercise:
- Students take turns sharing personal dilemmas (real or hypothetical), while others offer possible solutions.
- Reflection:
- Is it best to stay out of other people’s problems?
- Do you believe professional help (counselors, psychologists) is useful, or is it better to rely on friends and family?
- Would you ever consult a psychic or clairvoyant for advice?
Flashcard Scenarios
Provide students with thought-provoking dilemmas, such as:
- You witness a friend cheating on an exam. Do you report them?
- You find a wallet on the street. What do you do?
- Your best friend asks you to lie for them. How do you respond?
- You get a job offer but it conflicts with your family’s expectations. What do you choose?
Conclusion
By discussing dilemmas, students develop critical thinking skills, improve their ability to articulate thoughts, and engage in meaningful ethical discussions.
