How to Play the Describe Your Classmate ESL Game

Preparation:

Before class, download and print the free Describe Your Classmate worksheet (PDF below).

Instructions for Teachers:

1. Give each student a worksheet with a clothing checklist and space to write a description.
2. Students choose a classmate to describe (without revealing their name).
3. Observation and note-taking:
   • Students tick the correct boxes to describe their classmate’s appearance and clothing.
   • They write down the colors of the clothing items.
4. Write a description:
   • Students write full sentences describing their classmate’s appearance, focusing on adjectives, clothing, and colors.
   • Encourage students to use descriptive language and complete sentences (e.g., This person has short brown hair and is wearing a blue jacket and black jeans.).
5. Speaking practice – Guess who?
   • One by one, students read their descriptions aloud to the class (without saying the name).
   • The rest of the class listens carefully and tries to guess who is being described.
6. Encourage discussion:
   • If students can’t guess, allow the writer to give extra clues.
   • Discuss how adjectives and details helped in identifying the person.
