Areas of Agreement

Areas of Agreement
Helping students practice agreeing and disagreeing in English is a great way to develop their conversation skills. This interactive ESL activity encourages students to share personal experiences while using natural expressions for agreement and disagreement.
Preparation
Before class, prepare a worksheet with incomplete personal statements for students to fill in with true information about themselves.
How to Conduct the Activity
- Personalized Sentences
- Give each student a worksheet.
- Students complete the sentences with information that is true for them.
- Pair Work: Agree or Disagree?
- Once students have completed their sentences, they pair up.
- Go over useful expressions for agreement and disagreement, such as:
✅ So do I. / So am I. / Me too.
❌ I don’t. / Mine isn’t. / I’m not.
- Sharing and Reacting
- Student A reads their first sentence aloud.
- Student B reacts by agreeing or disagreeing, using the correct expression.
- Example:
A: Last weekend, I went to the park.
B: Really? So did I!
A: My favorite kind of music is hip-hop.
B: Mine isn’t. - Student A continues reading all their sentences, and Student B responds.
- Then, they swap roles.
- Class Feedback
- After all pairs have finished, ask students to report back on their areas of agreement with their partner.
