Travel Advice

One of the most engaging ways to help students practice using English for real-world situations is by encouraging them to give advice on something they are familiar with. In this Travel Advice activity, students write travel tips for a country, city, or region they know well. Afterward, they share their advice with their classmates, who must guess which destination they are describing. This activity not only helps students practice advice-giving but also allows them to use descriptive language and expand their vocabulary in an enjoyable and interactive way.

Materials Needed:

  • A worksheet for each student.
  • Pen or pencil for writing.

Activity Overview:

  1. Prepare the Worksheet:
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student. The worksheet should include a space at the top for students to write the name of a country, city, or region. Then, it should have 12 blank spaces for students to write their travel advice.
  2. Write Travel Advice:
At the beginning of the activity, give each student a worksheet. Ask them to think of a country, city, or region they are familiar with and want to offer travel advice about. They should write the name of the place at the top of the worksheet, but remind them to keep it a secret. Next, instruct the students to write 12 pieces of travel advice. Encourage them to consider things like:
    • Where to go and what to see.
    • Local customs and culture.
    • Foods to try.
    • Tips for getting around or avoiding common travel mistakes.
To make the activity more engaging, tell students that in the last two pieces of advice, they must use new or creative phrases for giving advice, such as:
    • “You’d be wise to…”
    • “I highly recommend that you…”
    • “It’s a great idea to…”
  3. Sharing Travel Advice:
When everyone has finished writing their advice, divide the students into groups of three or four. In their groups, students take turns reading their travel advice aloud to the group. Each time a student shares their advice, the other members of the group should listen carefully and try to guess which country, city, or region the advice is about.
  4. Guessing Game:
After a student has shared their travel advice, the other students in the group can ask follow-up questions or make guesses about the destination. The student sharing the advice should only answer “yes” or “no” to keep the guessing fun and challenging.
  5. Reveal and Discuss:
After everyone has had a chance to share their travel advice, ask each student to reveal the place they were describing. Discuss any interesting or surprising advice shared by the students.

Why This Activity Works:

The Travel Advice activity is not only a great way to practice giving advice, but it also encourages students to think critically and creatively about travel and culture. It also provides a natural way for students to expand their vocabulary by introducing different ways to give advice and express recommendations. Additionally, the guessing aspect adds an element of fun and competition to the activity, making it more engaging for students.

By focusing on a place they know well, students are able to draw from their own experiences, making the activity feel more personal and relevant. This also helps students feel more confident in their ability to express themselves in English, especially in real-world contexts.
