Procedure
Divide the class into pairs. Give each student a copy of either the A or B reading sheets. The students read the short articles silently by themselves and use a dictionary or consult the teacher if they don’t understand a word or phrase. After the students have read and understood the articles, the teacher takes the articles away. Then student A will communicate what was in A’s article to student B, and student B will communicate what was in B’s article to A. Then all of the students take a test to see how much information they were able to communicate.

Endangered means that there are very few left, so they might become extinct.The leatherback is the largest sea turtle and can grow to be about 2 meters long. The leatherback turtle’s primary diet is jellyfish, although it eats fish, mollusks, and other sea creatures. They are born on land but live their lives in water. The male leatherbacks never return to land after they are born and the females only return to land to lay eggs.The leatherbacks, like all sea turtles, are endangered. More and more, people are using the beaches where sea turtles lay eggs. The sea turtles are easily disturbed by noise and lights. A fourth cause is irresponsible fishing. Shrimp fishermen often catch sea turtles in their nets. The sea turtles drown when that happens.Finally, pollution on the oceans kills many turtles every year. Turtles confuse floating plastic garbage with jellyfish and eat the garbage. But they can’t digest the garbage so they die. | Tasmanian Tigers Have you ever heard of the Tasmanian tiger? You probably haven’t ever seen one and you probably never will because it is extinct. Extinct means that they have all died and there are no more in the world.Actually, the Tasmanian tiger was not a tiger. It was meat-eating marsupial. A marsupial is an animal like a kangaroo. Tasmanian tigers have stripes on their backs, which makes them look a little like tigers. And that’s why they are called tigers. The Tasmanian tiger lived in Australia, New Guinea, and the island of Tasmania. But it is now extinct in all three places. Tasmanian tigers went extinct in Australia because of competition from the Dingoes, a kind of wild dog. About 2000 years ago, the Tasmanian tigers were extinct in Australia.Tasmanian tigers went extinct on the Island of Tasmania in the 1930s. Sheep farmers hunted them because the Tasmanian tigers were killing sheep. The last known Tasmanian tiger died in 1936 in a zoo. But are they really extinct? Every year, a few people claim to see one on the Island of Tasmania. And local tribesmen on the New Guinea also say that they have seen some in the mountains. But nobody has been able to prove that they are still alive. |
