Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about the concept of artwork.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about tools for making art.
  • Explore and apply the concept of what art is to why music is also an art.

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of different kinds of art.
  • Orally use words that describe how to make art.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by talking about why people like to create art.
  • Use key concept words [art, painting, sculpting, tools, music].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • What art is.
  • How to make a painting.
  • How to make a sculpture.
  • Some tools that artists use.
  • Why music is a kind of art.

Model

  • Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (children, a classroom, an art teacher, a painting). What does the children’s painting show? (answers will vary).
  • Ask children: What is your favorite kind of art to make in art class? (answers will vary).
  • Proceed to the next slide. Say: Some artists visit places and paint what they see. What place would you like to paint? (answers will vary).

Apply

Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to describe how they’ve made a piece of art. and help them learn more about the instruments they’re interested in. After the second game, have them discuss which kind of art looks like the most fun to make.

  • Ask children: Why do you think art is important? Explain.
  • Summarize for children that we can make art by using our creativity to make something beautiful. Encourage children to think about an artist that they like.
