Watching Animals Grow

Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about how animals grow.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about animals and growing.
  • Explore and apply the concept of the different stages of animal growth and where different animals live.

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of growth.
  • Use the proper names for child and adult animals.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about the different places animals live.
  • Use key concept words [grow, baby, adult, develop, zoo, wild animals, pets].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about how animals grow:

  • What is growth.
  • How animals change as they grow.
  • The difference between how domestic animals grow up and how wild animals grow up.
  • How growing animals need to be taken care of.

Model

Ask children: What are some names for baby animals? (cubs, puppies, ducklings). Ask children: What are some ways adult animals might look different from baby animals? (they’re bigger, different colors, lions grow manes, etc.) Say: Sometimes when you look at a baby animal, it is hard to believe that it can grow up to be so big. What are some animals you could watch grow in your own home? (cats, dogs, fish, etc.)

Apply

Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about baby animals they’ve seen. After the second game, encourage them to share experiences they have had with young animals, and talk about how they were different from adult animals.

Close

Ask children: The butterfly is an animal that goes through big changes as it grows. Draw a series of pictures that shows the three basic stages of a butterfly’s growth. Say: As animals grow, they change. When animals grow, they need to be taken care of. Think of how you are taken care of.
