Looking for a fun and interactive ESL activity to teach adverbs of frequency? “At the Hairdresser” is a highly engaging and amusing classroom game that encourages students to use adverbs of frequency in a creative way while practicing real-world conversations. This activity is perfect for pair work, role-playing, and laughter-filled lessons!

How to Play the “At the Hairdresser” Game

  1. Prepare the Worksheets – Print one copy of the two worksheets for each pair of students.
  2. Pre-Teach Vocabulary – Write the following categories on the board:
    • Liquid
    • Bird
    • Expression of shock
    • Kitchen machine
    • Car part
    • Carpenter’s tool
    • Cooking verb
    • Vegetable
    • Adjective (positive/negative)
      Ask students for examples of each and write them down.
  3. Review Adverbs of Frequency – Go over adverbs such as always, usually, sometimes, never, and their meanings.
  4. Pair Up Students – One student is the hairdresser, and the other is the customer.
  5. Fill in the Blanks – Instead of reading the script, students ask their partner for missing words based on the given categories.
    • Example:
      • Student A: “Give me an expression of shock.”
      • Student B: “Oh my god!”
      • Student A: “Name a bird.”
      • Student B: “An eagle.”
  6. Read the Script – Once all blanks are filled, students read the dialogue aloud. The unexpected and funny answers create a hilarious conversation that gets the whole class laughing!
  7. Perform for the Class – Have some pairs read their dialogues aloud for extra fun. You can also mix partners and repeat the exercise.
