Christmas Blockbusters

This Christmas word game is adapted from a famous TV game show. This version works well for revising Christmas vocabulary.

Procedure

  1. Draw the Grid
Draw a 5 x 5 hexagon grid on the board.
  2. Add the Letters
Write the Christmas letters below into the 25 hexagonal spaces.
  3. Divide the Class
Split the class into two teams and allocate each team a different colour, e.g., white and blue.
  4. Choose Directions
The two teams decide which direction they want to play: top to bottom or left to right.
  5. Start the Game
Start with the center letter(s), e.g., if the letters were NYD, the clue might be: The first day of the year.
The two teams then race to answer the clue.
The first team to answer correctly wins the hexagon and has their colour (white or blue) put into the space. That team then chooses the next letter(s).
  6. Continue Play
Give a clue for the next letter(s). Both teams race to answer.
The aim is for one team to connect the hexagons from top to bottom or left to right. The first team to make the connection is the winner.
  7. Strategic Play
Remind the students that this is a fairly strategic game and they need to choose their moves carefully.
