How to Play the Describe It! ESL Game

Preparation:

Before class, download and print the free adjective and noun picture cards (PDF below). Cut out the adjective cards and place the noun pictures face up on a table.

Instructions for Teachers:

  1. Divide students into groups of three to encourage teamwork.
  2. Shuffle and distribute the adjective cards:
    • Each student gets four adjective cards (face down).
    • The remaining adjective cards are placed in a face-down pile with the top card facing up.
  3. Goal of the game:
    • Players must match four adjective cards to describe one noun picture on the table.
  4. Turn-based gameplay:
    • Each player takes turns picking up a new card and discarding one.
    • Players can choose to take the top card from the pile or the previously discarded card.
    • Players must always have four cards in their hand.
  5. Winning the round:
    • When a player has four adjectives that match a noun picture, they place them in front of the image.
    • The player must describe the noun using the adjectives in the correct order.
    • If all players agree that the adjective-noun match is correct, that student wins the round.
    • The winning noun picture is then removed from the game, and a new round begins.
  6. Continue playing:
    • Play multiple rounds and see who wins the most rounds.
