Do you agree?

Do you agree?

Helping students express their opinions is a key skill in learning English. This interactive ESL activity focuses on agreeing and disagreeing while reinforcing sentence structure and discussion skills.

Preparation

Before class, prepare a worksheet with jumbled sentences that express opinions. Make one copy per student.

How to Run the Activity

Step 1: Forming Opinions

  1. Hand out the worksheet to each student.
  2. Explain that the sentences are mixed up and need to be reordered correctly.
  3. Students rewrite the sentences with proper punctuation. Example:
    • Jumbled: season the best summer is
    • Corrected: Summer is the best season.
  4. Once students have completed the worksheet, go through the correct answers as a class.

Step 2: Agreeing and Disagreeing

  1. Draw students’ attention to useful agreement and disagreement expressions:
    I agree because… / That’s true! / I think so too.
    I don’t think so. / I disagree because… / Not really!
  2. Have students write their responses to each opinion, using these expressions.

Step 3: Group Discussion

  1. Divide students into small groups of three or four.
  2. One student reads out an opinion from the worksheet.
  3. Other students agree or disagree and explain why.
  4. The discussion continues until all opinions have been debated.

Step 4: Class Reflection

  • Bring the class back together and discuss:
    • Which opinions caused the most debate?
    • Did anyone change their mind after hearing different viewpoints?
