Simone, you mentioned your family owned a Volkswagen van.

Yes, that’s correct. It was amazing!

Wow, that’s awesome. You know, when I was in high school, I also had a Volkswagen van.

Really? They’re pretty cool, aren’t they?

Oh, absolutely! I loved mine.

Why did you like it so much?

Well, I played sports—baseball, basketball, football—and my van was perfect for transporting all my teammates. I used to drive everyone to and from practice and games. It was like I was the team’s personal bus driver.

Did you call it a van or a bus?

Actually, in California, we called it the Volkswagen bus. But I think either term was fine.

My family had the camper version, which had a refrigerator, a table, a bed, and a pop-up top for an extra loft bed.

That sounds really cool. You could fit at least four people comfortably in that camper van.

Yeah, it was great. Mine wasn’t as fancy; it didn’t have the camper setup. There was a flat area in the back, but no bed. It did have a small sink, though I never hooked up water to it, so I didn’t use it much. I mostly used the van for school.

My best friend also had a van in high school.

Really? That must have made him pretty popular since he could fit a lot of people in it.

Definitely. My van was all white. What color was yours?

My parents’ van was white too. My friend’s van was black and white and had a skull on the front. It looked like a pirate van—not a ship, but a pirate van. It was pretty cool back then.

I have a lot of good memories with that van. I wish I still had it.

Me too. Does your family still have theirs?

No, they decided it was time to move on.

I sold mine after a few years because I wanted a sports car. I kind of regret it now, but I guess that’s normal. Everyone misses their old cars, right?
