The Dutch language is full of comical and funny Dutch words when translated literally into English.
In this case, Dutch should not be translated literally or you will end up with lots of funny Dutch words that are just lost in translation! Take a look!
Apetrots
“Ik ben apetrots op jou” literally meaning “I am monkey proud of you”. The translation in English would be “I’m really proud of you”.
Boterham
Literally translated as “butter ham”. It actually means sandwich or a slice of bread.
Spiegelei
Literally translated as “mirror egg”. It is in reality a fried egg. Imagine an egg looking in the mirror saying: “Wow! Is that me?”
Klokhuis
“Clock house” meaning apple house. That’s how I imagine it…
But that’s actually what it is…
Pindakaas
Meaning peanut butter. It literally translates as “peanut cheese”. Lekker!
Schildpad
It literally means “shield toad”. One can wonder why a toad needs a shield!
Schoonmoeder
Literally translated as “clean mother”. Everybody wish to have such a mother-in law!
Toiletbril
Meaning “toilet glasses” for toilet seat. I dont’ want to know why.
Paardenbloem
Literally “horse flower”. A beautiful image for a dandelion.
Handschoenen
Well, look at the picture and guess the translation! Maybe in the past they used schoes as gloves.
Luipaard
Why is a leopard a “lazy horse”? Wasn’t it the fastest animal on the planet? And what does it have to do with horses?
Brandslang
It’s a “fire snake” used by the firefighters. Well, you can fight fire with fire!
Tuinslang
Another “snake”. This time for the “garden”.
Spijkerbroek
Very comfortable “nail pants” as jeans.
The name comes from “klinknagels” (rivets) with whom trousers were made when they were developed in the 1870s by the tailor Jacob Davis.
Apenstaartje
“Little monkey tail”. A wonderful figurative expression to indicate the @
Ezelsbruggetje
Meaning “donkey’s bridge”, meaning mnemonic, meaning a device such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something.
Oorlog
“Oor” means ear and “log” means troublesome… So troublesome ear for war. It makes sense.
Another origin of the word according to Wikipedia is that it comes from the Old Norse words “ørlög” (fate) and “ørlygi” (fight, battle), giving the idea that to the Dutch war appears to be a matter of fate. Something that cannot be helped, something that you have to undergo. This interpratation actually makes more sense.
Patatje oorlog
“War fries”. They are flemish fries served with saté sauce, mayonnaise and raw onion. It’s literally a war in your mouth!
Oorbellen
“Ear bells” or earrings. Here they are…
Mierenneuker
Literally translated “somebody who is intimate with ants”, meaning somebody who cares too much about details.
Paddestoel
Equivalent to pad (“toad”) + -en- + stoel (“chair”), so the chair where toad sit: the mushroom! Beautiful!
Wasbeer
Last but not least my favourite: a “wash bear” for a raccoon. Beautifully illustrated by Laura Frame, whose website and facebook page I highly recommend! You can see more of these pictures!
