Creating stories
Content Objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the concept of creating stories.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about the parts of a story.
- Explore and apply the concept of the differences between fiction and nonfiction..
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to create stories.
- Orally use words that describe different kinds of stories.
- Extend oral vocabulary by talking about why people like to create stories.
- Use key concept words [words, illustrations, author, illustrator, fiction, nonfiction].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about:
- What a story is.
- How words help tell a story.
- How illustrations help tell a story.
- What is on the cover of a book.
Model
- Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (children, an adult or teacher, reading a book). Do you like to read with a group or on your own? (answers will vary).
- Ask children: What is your favorite book that you have read recently? (answers will vary).
- Proceed to the next slide. Say: One place we can find stories is in a library. Why do you think libraries are important? (answers will vary).
Apply
Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to name a fiction and a nonfiction book that they’ve enjoyed and help them learn more about the books they’re interested in. After the second game, have them choose a book from the classroom and point out the title, author, and illustrator.

- Ask children: Why do you like to create stories? Explain.
- Summarize for children that we create stories by using words and pictures to tell about something. We can share our stories with our families and friends. Encourage children to think about what story they would like to write a sequel to.
