This free printable worksheet activity is designed for pair work and can be easily adapted for different levels. It’s great for reviewing vocabulary, reinforcing grammar, and encouraging students to be both creative and strategic in their use of English.

💡 Why Use This Activity in Class?

Forming questions correctly is one of the trickiest parts of learning English. “Guess the Word” helps students:

  • Practice forming questions using a variety of question words (who, what, where, when, why, how, etc.)
  • Develop critical thinking as they narrow down the identity of the mystery word
  • Improve listening and speaking skills in a natural and enjoyable way
  • Work collaboratively with classmates
  • Expand their vocabulary across topics like objects, people, places, jobs, and time expressions

📝 How to Use the ‘Guess the Word’ Worksheet

Prep Before Class:

  • Download and print one copy of the worksheet for each pair of students.
  • Cut along the indicated lines so each student has a set of words that their partner can’t see.

🧩 In-Class Procedure

Step 1: Demonstrate the Game

  1. Call a volunteer to the front of the class and have them sit with their back to the board.
  2. Write a mystery word on the board (e.g., “doctor”).
  3. The rest of the class asks only questions to help the student guess the word (e.g., “Do they work in a hospital?”, “Is it a person?”, “Do they wear a uniform?”).
  4. The student guesses based on the questions.
  5. Emphasize: no miming, definitions, or direct descriptions – only questions are allowed.

Step 2: Pair Up Students

  • Divide the class into pairs (Student A and Student B).
  • Give each student their side of the worksheet and remind them not to show their words to their partner.
  • Give students a few minutes to read through their word list and think of possible questions.

Step 3: Play the Game

  • Set a 5-minute timer.
  • Student A starts by asking questions to help their partner guess the words on their list.
  • Every time Student B guesses correctly, Student A puts a tick next to the word. If they fail to guess it after several questions, they mark it with a cross.
  • When the time is up, they switch roles.
  • At the end, both students add up the total number of correct guesses – the pair with the most is the winner!

🔁 Bonus Extension Idea

Want to level it up? Have students write their own set of words following a theme or vocabulary category you provide (e.g. “jobs,” “places,” or “food”). They can then swap sheets with another pair and play again. This not only reinforces vocabulary but also encourages deeper thinking and personalization.
