Hire, Rent or Let?

Hire and Rent

If you pay a sum of money in order to use something for a short period of time, you can say that you hire it or rent it. Hire is more common in British English and rent is more common in American English.

We hired a car from a local car agency.

He rented a car for the weekend.

If you make a series of payments in order to use something for a long period, you say that you rent it. You do not usually say that you hire it.

A month’s deposit may be required before you can rent the house.


Let

If you rent a building or piece of land from someone, you can say that they let it to you. The past tense and past participle of let is let.

The cottage was let to an actor from London.

This usage is more common in British English than American English. The usual American terms are rent and rent out.

The house was rented to a farmer.

  3. My best friend Anna has invited me and my boyfriend to her wedding, but I have nothing smart to wear. I think I will _____________________ a dress.
  4. Last year I went to Greece in August. I visited some wonderful little islands that would have been fantastic, if they had been a bit less crowded… There were signs saying “Rooms to ____________” everywhere, but the rooms were all taken and we had to sleep on the beach.
  5. The company Tim works for is very big and their business is rapidly growing. They have just _______________ a hundred new employees and they are going to recruit more in the near future.
  6. Isabel learnt her English in Britain. She did part of her University degree there. In her first year, she lived on campus, while in her second year she decided to ______________ a house with some English friends, which was a really good idea.
  7. “How about _________________ a bicycle and going for a ride in Hide Park on Sunday?”“Oh, yes. It sounds great! I really need some exercise.”
