Help students practice adverbs of degree by discussing and rating different healthy habits and lifestyles in this fun ESL speaking activity!
🔹 How to Play
👥 Pair Up & Prepare
- Give each student a worksheet listing 14 different healthy habits (e.g., drinking 2L of water daily, exercising three times a week, sleeping 8 hours a night).
- Ask students to read through the list and choose the healthiest habit. Have them explain why to a partner.
🎯 Activity Steps
1️⃣ Introduce adverbs of degree and write the rating system on the board:
- 5 = extremely healthy
- 4 = very healthy
- 3 = quite healthy
- 2 = not really healthy
- 1 = not at all healthy
2️⃣ Students work in pairs to discuss and grade each habit based on how healthy they think it is. They don’t need to agree!
3️⃣ Review sentence structure for adverbs of degree, emphasizing how “not really” and “not at all” change sentence construction.
4️⃣ Group Discussion: Pairs join another pair to form groups of four.
- Each group creates one additional healthy habit and writes it down.
- Groups then share their new habit with the class, and the whole class rates it using adverbs of degree.
