How Should We Improve Our School?

Encouraging students to discuss, agree, and disagree in English is a great way to develop their communication skills. In this interactive speaking activity, students work together to decide how to spend a $50,000 school improvement budget by debating new facilities and equipment.

Step 1: Brainstorming Ideas (Pair Work)

  1. Pair up students and ask them to think of four facilities or equipment that would improve their school.
  2. They should list their ideas and write reasons why each improvement is necessary. Example:
    • New computers for the library – Students need better technology for research.
    • A covered sports area – So we can play sports in any weather.

Step 2: Sharing & Debating (Group Work)

  1. Each pair joins another pair to form a group of four.
  2. Students take turns presenting their ideas while their group agrees or disagrees using the expressions below: Agreeing:
    I agree. That’s a good idea, because…
I couldn’t agree with you more.
    You’re absolutely right. Disagreeing:
    I don’t agree, because…
    I totally disagree.
    I’m not sure about that.
  3. Encourage students to justify their opinions and try to convince their classmates.

Step 3: Making a Final Decision

  1. Each group chooses ONE improvement they all agree on.
  2. They write their final choice and reasons on the worksheet.
  3. Each group presents their idea to the class.

Step 4: Class Vote

  1. After all presentations, students vote on the best idea.
  2. Discuss the winning proposal and why it was the most popular choice.
