lonely hearts and pen pals

Lonely Hearts and Pen Pals

Lonely Hearts and Pen Pals

Objective

The goal of this activity is to encourage students to use as much descriptive vocabulary as possible while improving their fluency in writing. Through this engaging exercise, students will practice describing themselves and the type of person they would like to meet, expanding their vocabulary and refining their writing skills.

Materials

  • Provided activity sheet (including vocabulary lists and flashcards for body parts)

Procedure

  1. Introduction to the Activity
Begin by explaining to the students that they will be doing a short writing exercise focused on self-description and describing an ideal pen pal or partner.
  2. Vocabulary Expansion
Provide students with as much new vocabulary as possible before they start writing. Use the vocabulary list to introduce useful words related to physical appearance and personality. Encourage students to help each other with sentence construction and vocabulary queries.
  3. Writing Exercise
Students will complete the following two writing tasks:
    • Describe Yourself: Students should write a personal description, including their physical appearance, personality traits, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and any other important details (such as age, pets, smoking habits, etc.).
    • Describe Your Ideal Pen Pal or Partner: Students will write about the type of person they would like to meet and the reason for wanting to meet them (e.g., for fun, love, friendship, or marriage).
  4. Peer Review and Discussion
After writing, students can exchange their descriptions with a partner for feedback. Encourage them to discuss their writing, suggest improvements, and share interesting details about their ideal pen pal.
  5. Sharing and Reflection
If students are comfortable, they can read their descriptions aloud to the class. This will provide speaking practice and help reinforce the new vocabulary they have learned.
