Me Neither!

Me Neither!
Helping students practice agreeing with negative statements is an important skill in English conversation. This fun and interactive classroom activity encourages students to engage in real-life discussions while improving their grammar and speaking fluency.
Preparation
Before class, print out a worksheet for each student. The worksheet should contain a list of incomplete negative statements, such as:
- I’m not very interested in politics.
- I have never been to Australia.
- I don’t enjoy waking up early.
Each sentence should have a blank space where students can personalize their responses.
How to Run the Activity
Step 1: Introduce the Grammar Rule
- Write the following structure on the board:
Neither / Nor + Auxiliary Verb + Subject- Examples:
- I don’t like coffee. → Neither do I.
- She hasn’t traveled abroad. → Nor have I.
- Examples:
- Give students practice by stating negative statements aloud and asking them to respond correctly.
Step 2: Completing the Worksheet
- Give each student a worksheet and ask them to complete the sentences with information that is true for them.
- Explain that their goal is to find classmates who agree with their statements.
Step 3: Moving Around the Classroom
- Students walk around the room and read their sentences to different classmates.
- If a classmate agrees with their negative statement, they should respond using an appropriate phrase:
- Neither am I!
- Nor do I!
- The student who agrees writes their name in the second column of the worksheet.
- If a classmate disagrees, they should share their own negative statement and see if the first student agrees with it.
Step 4: Follow-Up Discussion
- Encourage follow-up questions for deeper conversation.
- Why don’t you like sports?
- When did you stop playing video games?
- Once students have filled their worksheets, gather the class for a feedback session.
- Discuss the most common and surprising agreements found in the activity.
