MY SPECIAL LUNCH: Experiential Learning through Pizza Making
Target Group: 5th year

Activity Objective: To practice the English language through hands on activities that test listening, and speaking. To provide lessons that are fun and challenge students to think outside of the book.
Procedure
This activity is typically set up towards the end of the semester for a 5th-grade class.
In the warm-up class, the students practice phrases like “What would you like?”, “I would like ___ and ___, please,” “Here you are,” “Thank you,” “two please,” and so on.
Secondly, students vote on their favorite pizza toppings, then surprise them by letting them make their own pizza.
Each group has the opportunity to approach and request materials and ingredients, using the language they practiced. Then, the students follow your directions, such as “next, add ____” or “now, roll out your pizza dough.” Have the ingredients prepared and ready for the students to ask for, much like they were in a restaurant, making their own personal pizzas.
After making their pizzas, collectively clean up the room while the pizzas are being prepared, and afterward, enjoy the pizza together.
Materials and Preparation
To prepare for the lesson, you would typically get the dough and sauce ready in advance. The school usually has most of the supplies on hand since most school kitchens are equipped with the necessary materials. You’d use rolling pins, bowls, and spoons, and you might bring a pizza cutter with you. The school typically has ovens, and you would be responsible for prepping, loading, and unloading them. For cleanup, you’d use soap and brushes provided by the school.
You would bring the ingredients based on what the students want, including cheese. Each group would choose two ingredients, and all the pizzas would be topped with cheese.
