Neither and So

Neither and So

Helping students master agreeing and disagreeing with both positive and negative statements is essential for fluency. This interactive ESL activity encourages students to use “so” and “neither” correctly while improving their speaking skills.

Preparation

Before class, print out a worksheet for each student. The worksheet should contain a list of statements with two verb options, such as:

  • I (have/don’t have) a pet.
  • I (like/don’t like) coffee.
  • I (can/can’t) swim.

Students should circle one verb to make each sentence true for them.

How to Run the Activity

Step 1: Introduce the Grammar Rule

  1. Write the following sentences on the board:
    • I have a sister.
    • I don’t have a sister.
  2. Show students how to agree using so and neither:
    • A: I have a sister.B: So have I.
    • A: I don’t have a sister.B: Neither have I.
  3. Show students how to disagree using short answers:
    • A: I have a sister.B: I haven’t.
    • A: I don’t have a sister.B: I have.

Step 2: Completing the Worksheet

  1. Each student circles the verb that makes each sentence true for them.
  2. Explain that their goal is to find classmates who agree and classmates who disagree with them.

Step 3: Moving Around the Classroom

  1. Students walk around reading their statements aloud to classmates.
  2. When a classmate agrees, they respond using so or neither and write that classmate’s name in the “Same Answer” column.
  3. When a classmate disagrees, they respond with a short answer and write that classmate’s name in the “Different Answer” column.
  4. Encourage students to speak to as many classmates as possible to fill both columns.

Step 4: Follow-Up Discussion

  1. Once students complete the task, have them share their results with the class.
  2. Ask students to report the most common and unexpected agreements and disagreements.
  3. Discuss any challenging grammar points together.
