What is Phonics Level three?

In Level 3 children continue to use all the sounds they were taught in Level 2. In addition, they are taught additional sounds (phonemes) and the letters / groups of letters that represent them (graphemes).

Level 3 introduces children to the remaining, more difficult and/or less commonly used phonemes. There are around 25 of these, depending on which scheme is followed, mainly made up of two letters such as /ch/, /ar/, /ow/ and /ee/.

Level 3 phonics is the introduction of more than one letter making a sound such as ‘ait, ‘ee’, and ‘sh’.

Level three Phonics Sounds

Level 3 phonics is made up of the most common consonant and vowel digraphs and trigraphs and is usually taught to children in reception.

The Level 3 Phonics Sound includes the letter and sounds:

‘ch’, ‘oo’, ‘air,’ ‘v’, ‘sh’, ‘oo’, ‘ure’, ‘w’, ‘th’, ‘ar’, ‘er’, ‘x’, ‘ng’, ‘or’, ‘y’, ‘ai’, ‘ur’, ‘z’, ‘ee’, ‘ow’, ‘zz’, ‘igh’, ‘oi’, ‘qu’, ‘oa’, ‘ear’

Alongside this, children are taught to recognise more tricky words, including ‘me,’ ‘was,’ ‘my,’ ‘you’ and ‘they’. They learn the names of the letters, as well as the sounds they make. Activities might include learning mnemonics (memory aids) for tricky words, practising writing letters on mini whiteboards, using word cards and singing songs like the Alphabet Song.

How can I help children with Phase 3 Phonics?

Level 3 takes most children around 12 weeks.

By the end, they should be able to say the sound made by most, or all, Level 2 and 3 graphemes.
