“Pick Up Two” for Practicing Adverbs of Frequency

Looking for an engaging ESL activity to help students practice adverbs of frequency in a fun way? “Pick Up Two” is a simple yet effective sentence-building game that encourages students to think about grammar while having fun!

How to Play “Pick Up Two”

1️⃣ Prepare the Materials

  • Print and cut out a set of sentence halves for each group.
  • Divide the cards into two sets:
    • Beginnings (e.g., I always…, She sometimes…)
    • Endings (e.g., goes jogging in the morning., forgets her keys.)

2️⃣ Set Up the Groups

  • Divide students into groups of three or four.
  • Place both sets of sentence halves face down on the table.

3️⃣ Matching the Sentences

  • Players take turns picking one card from each set.
  • If the two halves form a grammatically correct sentence, they keep the cards and earn a point.
  • If the halves don’t match, the player returns them to the same position.

4️⃣ Continue Until All Pairs Are Found

  • The teacher walks around to check the sentences.
  • The student with the most points at the end wins!

Example Sentence Halves

Beginnings:
✔️ I always…
✔️ She usually…
✔️ They never…
✔️ He sometimes…
✔️ We hardly ever…

Endings:
✔️ wake up early on Sundays.
✔️ forget to bring our homework.
✔️ watch TV after dinner.
✔️ go to the gym after work.
✔️ eat fast food.
