Such and So
Such and So
Such is a determine, while so is an adverb. They often have the same meaning of ‘very’ or ‘to this degree’:
Those are such comfortable shoes.
Those shoes are so comfortable.
We use such + noun phrase and so + adjective or adverb phrase:
so + adjective | such + noun phrase |
You’re so beautiful. | He’s such a beautiful man. |
It was so cold we couldn’t work. | December was such a cold month. |
So can also be used in front of much, many, little, few to add emphasis:
So much food was wasted every day.
In those days there were so few doctors in our area.

EXERCISE 1.
Put such or so in the spaces in the following sentences.
e.g. It’s such a beautiful day today.
- She spoke __________ quietly I could hardly hear her.
- The weather was __________ bad that all the flights were cancelled.
- The party was great. We had __________ a good time!
- I like Jane. She’s __________ a lovely person.
- The film was __________ boring that I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
- It was __________ a horrible weather we had to stay at home.
- Your room is so untidy. I’ve never seen __________ a mess!
- How is your mother? It’s __________ a long time since I saw her.
EXERCISE 2.
Write each pair of sentences as one sentence using such or so as in the example.
e.g. The message was complex. I couldn’t understand it.
The message was so complex that I couldn’t understand it.
- 1. Â The music was loud. It kept all the neighbours awake.
- 2.  I had a big breakfast. I didn’t eat anything for the rest of the day.
- 3. There was a long queue. We decided to come back another time.
- 4.  They have much money. The don’t know what to do with it.
- 5. Â It was a beautiful ring. I bought it.
