That’s the Right Answer – A Fun Wh-Questions Game for ESL Learners

Looking for a fun and interactive way to practice Wh-questions in English? “That’s the Right Answer” is a fast-paced ESL group activity that helps students master question formation, improve fluency, and engage in natural speaking practice — all while having fun with their classmates.

🎯 Target Skills

  • Forming Wh- questions
  • Using a variety of verb tenses
  • Developing spontaneous speaking ability
  • Strengthening listening and response skills
  • Encouraging collaborative learning

🧾 What You’ll Need

  • One copy of the “That’s the Right Answer” card set per group of 4 students
  • Scissors to cut the cards
  • A timer (optional, to speed up the game)

👣 How to Play

  1. Preparation
Before class, download and print the free worksheet. Cut the page into individual cards as instructed.
  2. Group Setup
Divide your class into groups of four. Hand each group a full set of shuffled cards.
  3. Start the Game
    • The first student draws a card from the top of the pile.
    • They create and ask a Wh-question (e.g. What, Where, When, Why, Who, How) that would logically lead to the answer written on the card.
    • Any other student in the group can respond.
    • The first student who gives a correct response using the exact word or phrase on the card wins the card and scores 1 point.
  4. Take Turns
    • Continue clockwise. Each student draws one card per turn and asks a new question.
    • Play continues until there are no cards left.
  5. Winning the Game
    • The student with the most cards (points) at the end of the game is the winner.
    • In case of a tie, students can do a bonus round using 3 new cards.

📌 Example

  • Card: “in 2010”
  • Question: “When did you move to this city?”
  • Correct answer: “In 2010.”
  • Card: “with a spoon”
  • Question: “How do you eat soup?”
  • Answer: “With a spoon.”

🧠 Tips for Teachers

  • Encourage creativity and variety in questions.
  • To challenge higher-level students, ask them to form past perfect or future questions.
  • Use a timer to limit how long each student can think (e.g. 15 seconds per question).
