The Language Teacher

The Language Teacher

Lesson Overview

This ESL worksheet, The Language Teacher, combines reading comprehension, grammar practice, and vocabulary building. It focuses on the comparative structure “not as…as”, helping students learn different ways of comparing people, objects, and situations.

The story is short, funny, and relatable: Martin, an English teacher, tells his student Carla that he’s leaving for a better job. Carla tries to be kind but ends up unintentionally saying that every new teacher is worse than the one before!

Grammar Focus: Not as…as

Students learn that comparisons can be expressed in more than one way:

  • A wood is smaller than a forest.
  • A wood isn’t as large as a forest.
  • The weather is worse than last week.
  • The weather isn’t as good as last week.

This structure allows learners to express negative comparisons naturally.

Practice Exercise

Students rewrite sentences using not as + adjective + as:

  1. This movie is worse than the first one.
This movie isn’t as good as the first one.
  2. My computer is slower than yours.
My computer isn’t as fast as yours.
  3. My new apartment is bigger than my old one.
My new apartment isn’t as small as my old one.

Vocabulary Building

The worksheet introduces useful vocabulary from the story:

  • flattered – feeling pleased because of a compliment
  • current – belonging to the present time
  • kind – generous, friendly
  • final – the last
  • favourite – preferred above all others

Students match definitions, then choose grammatically correct sentences:

  • It’s very kind of you to say so.
  • Tell me about your current job.
  • It’s time to find another job.
  • His previous job had a lower salary.

Why This Lesson Works

This worksheet is effective because it:

  • Teaches comparatives in context, rather than isolated sentences.
  • Reinforces grammar through story + practice exercises.
  • Introduces real, useful vocabulary learners can apply outside the classroom.
  • Includes error correction practice, making students more aware of common mistakes.

Suggested Lesson Procedure

  1. Warm-up: Ask students about their favourite teacher and compare them with others (“My English teacher now isn’t as funny as my old teacher”).
  2. Reading: Read the story The Language Teacher together.
  3. Comprehension questions: Who is Martin? Why is Carla sad? What does she say about the new teacher?
  4. Grammar practice: Rewrite sentences with not as…as.
  5. Vocabulary activity: Match definitions and correct mistakes.
  6. Speaking extension: Students make 3 comparisons about school, family, or hobbies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
✅ Use comparatives with not as…as correctly
✅ Recognize and use practical vocabulary in context
