Procedure

Warm-Up Discussion

  1. Begin by discussing the concept of small talk with the students.
  2. Ask them for examples of when people make small talk (e.g., waiting in line, at a party, during a work break).
  3. Discuss cultural differences: Do the topics of small talk vary from country to country? What topics are considered appropriate or inappropriate?
  4. Encourage students to share their experiences and opinions—do they enjoy making small talk, or do they find it awkward?

Activity: Role-Playing Small Talk

  1. Distribute role-play cards with different everyday situations.
  2. In pairs or small groups, students decide what kind of small talk they would make in each scenario.
  3. Encourage them to use natural conversational phrases and expressions.
  4. After practicing, students can present their role-play to the class or switch partners for more interaction.

Example Role-Play Scenarios

  • Meeting a new colleague at work
  • Waiting in line at a coffee shop
