Looking for a lively, low-prep way to teach making polite requests and asking for permission? This free ESL printable game, titled “Could You…?”, is a student favorite for speaking fluency and confidence building.

🎯 What Does the “Could You…?” ESL PDF Include?

This downloadable PDF provides:

  • 4 unique student request cards (A, B, C, and D)
  • Target phrases for making requests and asking permission
  • Simple game instructions that promote speaking, listening, and social interaction

🎲 How the “Could You…?” Game Works

  1. Prep & Warm-Up
Start by reviewing common polite request forms like:
    • Could you open the window?
    • Could I use your pen?
    • Would you mind if I sat here?
  2. Set Up Groups
    • Divide students into groups of four.
    • Hand out one card per student (A, B, C, or D).
    • Students must not show their cards to each other.
  3. Gameplay
    • Student A asks one other group member their top request.
    • If the other student replies “Yes, of course,” Student A crosses it off.
    • If the response is “I’m sorry,” they must wait until their next turn.
    • Then it’s Student B’s turn, and so on.
    • The goal: be the first to cross off all 3 requests—but play continues until all students finish.
  4. Wrap-Up Discussion
After the game, reflect with the class:
    • Which requests were easiest to get a “yes” for?
    • Were there any surprises?
    • Can they use these expressions in real life?

🗣️ Language Focus

Students will practice:

  • Polite modal verbs (Could you…?, Could I…?)
  • Saying “yes” and “no” politely
  • Real-world classroom or everyday requests

💡 Why Teachers Love It

  • Student-centered and interactive
  • ✅ Boosts listening and speaking fluency
  • ✅ Helps with pragmatic English and tone
  • ✅ Perfect for group classes or icebreakers
  • ✅ No tech required — just print, cut, and go!

👩‍🏫 Pro Tip:

For larger classes, turn this into a classroom tournament where the fastest finisher in each group moves on to a new group. It keeps energy high and encourages repetition of target phrases!
