Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s Treasures online resources are specifically designed to help teachers teach by providing engaging activities for students at all levels. These Online Teacher Resources offer content designed to help teachers save time and keep students motivated and focused.

We Are Special

Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about the concept of how we are all special.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about different things we like to do.
  • Explore and apply concepts of how we are special to what it means to be unique.

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of how we are all special.
  • Orally use words that name and describe different things that we like to do.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about how each child in their classroom is special.
  • Use key concept words [like, special, do, unique, interest].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • How we are all special.
  • What unique means.
  • Some different things we like to do.
  • What some of our interests are.

Model

Ask children: What is this girl doing? (painting a picture). What is one of this girl’s interests? (art, painting). Ask children: An interest is something you like to do. What are some of your interests? (books, rulers, crayons, calendars, etc.).

Apply

Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to discuss what they like to do during recess and help them learn more about the activities they’re interested in. After the second game, have children discuss which of the pictures show activities they are interested in.

Close

Ask children: What is your favorite thing to do when you get home from school? Say: We are all special. We have some interests that are the same as our friends and some that are different. What interests do you and your friends have in common?

Additional Suggested Activities:

  • Tell children that we are constantly learning and getting better at things. Ask children to think about what they would like to improve on. Have children go back to the paint program and draw a picture of them doing something that they hope to get better at throughout the year.
  • Work with the children to brainstorm a list of goals for the year. What would they like to accomplish by the end of first grade? Encourage children to think about different kinds of goals, including social skills or how they will help their families at home.
