Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of farms.
  • Orally use words that describe ways that we can learn about different kinds of plants and animals on a farm.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about where different foods come from on a farm.
  • Use key concept words [corn, vegetables, cows, milking, planting, harvesting].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • What a farm is.
  • What plants grow on a farm.
  • What animals live on a farm.
  • How we use plants and animals from a farm.

Model

Ask children: What do you see in this photo? (field, soil, farmer, tractor). What is the farmer in the photo doing? (riding a tractor). Ask children: What is your favorite food that might come from a farm? (answers will vary). Say: There are many animals that live on a farm. Some animals that might live on a farm are chickens, cows, pigs, and horses. What do these animals need to be happy and healthy? (food, water, shelter).

Apply

Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about what foods from a farm they have seen in a supermarket and help the children learn more about the farm products they are interested in. After the second game, have them discuss other foods that come from cows, chickens, or a farming field.

Close

Ask children: If you had a farm, what plants would you grow and what animals would you take care of? Explain. Summarize that we get many foods from a farm. We drink milk from cows that live on a farm. We eat eggs from chickens that live on a farm. We eat fruits and vegetables that grow on a farm. Encourage children to think about what it’s like to work on a farm.
