Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about the concept of inventions.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about inventions they use every day.
  • Explore and apply the concept of how peoples’ lives were different before some things invented.

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of inventions.
  • Orally use words that describe how inventions we use every day have changed.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by talking about how inventions can change our lives.
  • Use key concept words [cell phone, computer, bicycle, DVD player, discover, invention].sic].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • What an invention is.
  • The invention of the bicycle.
  • The difference between telephones then and now.
  • Recent inventions.

Model

  • Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (a child using a computer). What do you think was different before computers were invented? (answers will vary).
  • Ask children: What single invention do you think has changed peoples’ lives the most? (answers will vary).
  • Proceed to the next slide. Say: You can see what a bicycle looked like long ago and what a bicycle looks like today. How are they the same and how are they different? (answers will vary).

Apply

Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to discuss other inventions and how they help us and help them learn more about the inventions they’re interested in. After the second game, have them discuss which kind of art looks like the most fun to make.

  • Ask children: What would you like to invent that would help people? Explain.
  • Summarize for children that to invent means to create something for the first time. Encourage children to think about the most useful inventions.
