Challenge Me!

Challenge Me!

Challenge Me!

Teaching students how to agree and disagree in English can be both engaging and interactive. This fun classroom activity encourages students to use natural expressions while trying to make unique statements that challenge their classmates.

Preparation

Before class, prepare a set of sentence starter cards for each group of four students. These should contain statements that students must complete with true information about themselves.

How to Play the Game

  1. Warm-Up Discussion
    • Write a few incomplete statements on the board (e.g., I always eat… / I have never…).
    • Ask students to complete them and practice agreeing and disagreeing with their classmates.
    • Teach or review key phrases such as:
So do I. / Me too. / Neither am I.
      I don’t. / I can’t. / That’s not true for me.
  2. Group Activity
    • Divide the class into groups of four and give each group a set of shuffled sentence cards.
    • Each student gets an equal number of cards.
  3. Making Statements
    • The first student picks a card and completes the sentence with a true but unique statement about themselves.
    • Example: I always wake up at 5 AM.
  4. Agree or Disagree?
    • The other group members respond using agreement or disagreement expressions.
    • If no one agrees, the student wins the card.
    • If someone agrees, the card goes to the center of the table.
  5. Challenge Option
    • If a student thinks a statement is not true, they can challenge it and ask for an explanation.
    • If the challenged student proves it’s true, they keep the card. If not, they lose the card.
  6. Winning the Game
    • The game continues until all the cards are used.
    • The student with the most cards at the end is the winner!
