Bugs, bugs, bugs!

Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about the concept of bugs.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about different features that bugs have.
  • Explore and apply concepts of different features that bugs have to how bugs look the same and different.

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of what bugs are.
  • Orally use words that name and describe different bugs.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about how different kinds of bugs look the same and different.
  • Use key concept words [bugs, wings, legs, eyes, blend, feature].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • What a bug is.
  • What features are.
  • Features that are the same for all bugs.
  • How some bugs can blend into their surroundings.

Model

Ask children: What kind of bugs do you see in this picture? (ants). What do you think they are doing? (answers will vary.). Ask children: How do bugs look different from other animals? (small, many legs, antennae, etc.) Proceed to the next slide. Say: This bug is called a grasshopper. It eats grasses and leaves. Can you think of what another kind of bug eats? (answers will vary).


Apply

Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to discuss whether they have seen these animals in real life. After the second game, have children discuss what they would do if they had the ability to blend and help them learn more about the bugs they are interested in.

Ask children: What is your favorite kind of bug? Why? Say: Many bugs are insects. Insects have certain features that are the same, like six legs and three body sections. Bugs have many ways to protect themselves and find food. Some bugs can blend into their surroundings. That means that other animals can’t see them! If you could be a bug, what kind of bug would you like to be?
