English ESL Worksheets: Newspapers Scandals

Newspaper Scandals

Story Telling for the TEFL Teacher

Materials:

Rumors and Scandals  AND  Two Newspapers

Activity Setup:

(1) Divide the class into two groups As and Bs.

All of the As will end up sitting in a row of desks and all of the Bs will sit opposite. There should be one (or possible two rows of desks) with As on one side and Bs on the other.

(2) As write their names on small slips of paper. The teacher distributes these names to the B students. Bs write their names on small slips of paper. Teacher distributes these names to the A students.

(3) Teacher gives a rumor marked with an ‘A‘ (bottom left right corner of rumor cards) to each A student and a ‘B‘ rumor to each B student.

(4) Students read the rumor and fill in the name of the slip of paper that they have. Students should memorize the contents of the rumor because they will have to tell the opposite groups. After the students have memorized (just remembered the contents), the teacher takes their scandal cards away.

Activity 1

(5) Now, As and Bs are facing each other and they exchange ‘news’ stories i.e. As will tell a story about some B member and the Bs will do likewise. When an A and B partner is finished exchanging a story, the B will stand up and find a different A to go to and exchange stories. For convenience, As should always remain seated in the same seat.

Did you hear about the naked university student?

(6) As students exchange scandal stories, they fill in the details of their newspapers. The only thing they DO NOT FILL IN is the ‘because’. That is activity 2.

(7) They should also ask each partner for one of the horoscopes.

Do you know what today’s horoscope for Taurus is?

(8) After they are finished, they form A and B groups.

Activity 2

All of the As get together and ask each other why they did it. Bs do likewise. For example:

  • A1: Why did you date your English professor?
  • A2: It was love. Love has no boundaries.  (Real answer by one of my students)
  • A2: Why did you go to the cowboy bar?
  • A3: I like to go to strange places and see how other people live.
  • A2: Well, why did you get naked and dance on the table?
  • A3: Naked?
  • A2: Yeah no clothes.
  • A3: Oops. (Turns red) I . . . uh . . . just wanted to fit in.    (Real conversation with one group)

Activity 3:

Ask class about their horoscope for today.
