How animals grow

Content Objectives

Children will:

  • Learn about the concept of how animals grow.
  • Access prior knowledge and build background about what we call animals when they are babies.
  • Explore and apply the concept of what animals need to grow

Language Objectives

Children will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of how animals grow.
  • Orally use words that describe what baby animals look like.
  • Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about how animals change as they grow.
  • Use key concept words [sick, doctor, nurse, medicine, emergency, hospital].

Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about how animals grow.

  • How we change as we grow.
  • What animals need to grow.
  • How animals change as they grow.
  • How what we need to grow is the same as animals and how it is different.

Model

After the host introduces the slideshow, point to the photo on screen. Ask children: What baby animal is the girl holding in the photo? (a puppy). What are some things that this puppy needs to grow? (food, water, shelter, walking, a leash, love). Ask children: Have you seen an animal grow up? (answers will vary). Say: There are many ways that we change as we grow. Some of these ways might be similar to how a baby animal grows. What are some ways that you have changed as you’ve grown? (taller, can walk, can talk, can play games, can read and write).

Apply

Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about things that they’re pets or the pets of people they know have needed to grow and help the children learn more about how to care for pets when they are babies. After the second game, have them discuss how the animals on the screen change as they grow and how they stay the same.

Close

Ask children: How would you help a baby animal grow? Explain. Summarize for children that there are many things that baby animals need to grow. They need food and water, and place to live. As we learn more about how animals grow, think about animals that you have seen and how they grow.
