“Formulate It” for Practicing Adverbs of Frequency

Looking for an engaging ESL activity to practice adverbs of frequency and verb usage? The “Formulate It” game is a fun, interactive classroom exercise that helps students improve their sentence structure, speaking confidence, and grammar skills. This game is perfect for small group learning and encourages quick thinking and friendly competition!

How to Play “Formulate It”

  1. Divide the class into groups of four.
  2. Prepare the cards – Each group gets:
    • A set of verb cards (face down in a pile).
    • A set of adverb of frequency cards (spread out face down).
  3. Assign numbers (1 to 4) to each student in the group.
  4. Start the game:
    • Student 1 picks a verb card and forms a “How often…?” question.
    • Student 2 picks an adverb card and answers using a full sentence.
    • Student 2 then picks a verb card and asks Student 3, continuing the cycle.
  5. Scoring System:
    • A student earns 1 point for a correctly formulated question or answer.
    • If a student makes a mistake, anyone in the group can correct it and steal the point!
  6. Continue playing until all cards are used. The student with the most points wins the round!

Example Round

  • Student 1: “How often do you argue with your friends?”
  • Student 2 (draws “Sometimes”): “I sometimes argue with my friends when we disagree.”
  • Student 2: “How often do you watch TV?”
  • Student 3 (draws “Usually”): “I usually watch TV in the evening.”
