Family Time
Content Objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the concept of family time.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about families.
- Explore and apply the concept of families.
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of family time.
- Orally use words that describe families.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about families.
- Use key concept words [connection, support].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about:
- What is a family.
- What is a connection.
- What is support.
Model
- Ask children: How many people are in this family? (Twelve). How many people are in your family? (answers will vary).
Ask children: Why are families important? (support, help, love, etc.) Say: Some people have large families while other people have small families. Families can consist of a mom, a dad, a brother, a sister, a grandparent, a cousin, an aunt, an uncle, and even a pet! Do you have any pets in your family? (answers will vary).
Apply
Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about the different connections they have with each family member. After the second game, have them discuss their favorite thing to do with their family.

Ask children: If you had your own family, who would be in it? Explain. Say: Everyone has a family. Some families are made up of different people such as a mom, dad, grandparent, brother, or sister. Everyone shares a different connection with each family member. Families support each other during good and bad times. When has your family supported you?
