Looking for a fun and interactive lesson to boost your students’ fluency and negotiation skills? This Holiday Resort role-play activity is the perfect way to engage your students while practicing essential speaking skills in a realistic and imaginative setting. Objective:
To enhance students’ fluency and negotiation skills by participating in a role-play scenario about developing a holiday resort on a tropical island.

Materials:

  • Role-play cards
  • Situation sheet
  • Pen and paper (optional for notes)

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Distribute the Role-Play Situation Sheet to each student. The situation sheet introduces the setting and context for the role-play activity.
  2. Each student then selects a Role-Play Card. It is crucial that there is at least one student representing the resort development company and one student representing the interests of the island community.
  3. The role-play begins! Students have the freedom to develop their characters as they see fit but must adhere to the general outline of their role. Their objective is to negotiate a solution that benefits both the islanders and the resort developers.

Holiday Resort Role-Play Scenario:

Setting:
A small inhabited island in the South Pacific with an unpronounceable name. The island boasts a beautiful tropical reef, pristine beaches, vast rainforests filled with undiscovered plant species, and abundant birdlife. At the heart of the island is a dormant volcano. The island’s main industries are fishing and farming, but the mayor of the island’s only town wants to boost the local economy by introducing tourism.

The Situation:
A resort development company sees great potential in the island and wants to create an exclusive holiday resort. However, this plan would involve significant changes to the island’s natural environment, including the destruction of parts of its pristine beaches and rainforest. The resort development company must negotiate with the islanders to reach an agreement. The islanders, particularly the mayor, must weigh the benefits of economic growth against the environmental costs of such development.

Role-Play Characters:

Islanders:

  • Mayor: Focused on boosting the local economy, but concerned about preserving the island’s beauty.
  • Environmental Activist: Passionate about protecting the island’s natural resources, particularly the reef and rainforest.
  • Local Fisherman: Interested in the economic opportunity but worried about the impact on fishing areas.
  • Local Farmer: Eager to see the island prosper, but concerned about changes to agricultural land.

Resort Development Company:

  • Lead Developer: Focused on building a luxurious resort and ensuring a high return on investment.
  • Marketing Director: Focused on presenting the island as a unique, eco-friendly vacation destination.
  • Engineer/Architect: Concerned with how to develop the resort while minimizing environmental damage.
  • Investor: Focused on financial returns and ensuring the project is profitable.
