“How Do I Do It?” for Practicing Adverbs of Manner

Looking for a fun, interactive ESL activity that gets students engaged and laughing while practicing adverbs of manner? The “How Do I Do It?” game is an exciting way to improve speaking skills, sentence formation, and vocabulary in a competitive setting.

How to Play “How Do I Do It?”

  1. Prepare the Materials
    • Print and cut out activity cards (e.g., sing a song, eat spaghetti, play football).
    • Print and cut out adverb cards (e.g., loudly, quickly, badly, nervously).
  2. Divide the Class into Two TeamsTeam A & Team B.
  3. Set Up the Game
    • Place the activity cards and adverb cards face down on a table.
    • One student from Team A picks one activity card and one adverb card.
    • The student acts out the activity in the manner described by the adverb (e.g., sing a song badly).
  4. Guess & Form a Sentence
    • Team A has one minute to guess both the activity and the adverb and form a correct sentence (e.g., He is singing a song badly).
    • If Team A answers correctly, they get one point.
    • If Team A fails, Team B has one chance to steal the point by forming the correct sentence.
  5. Rotate Turns – Continue with Team B, repeating the same process.
  6. The team with the most points wins! 🎉

Example Round

  • Student picks cards: “Drink a cup of coffee” + “nervously”
  • Student acts it out – Pretends to drink coffee with shaking hands and a worried expression.
  • Team guesses: “He is drinking a cup of coffee nervously.”Correct! 1 Point!

Sing a song | Eat spaghetti | Brush your teeth | Play football | Drive a car | Make the bed | Dance | Blow your nose | Dial a phone number | Drink a cup of coffee

📌 Adverb Cards:
Loudly | Quickly | Badly | Nervously | Happily | Aggressively | Sleepily | Quietly | Clumsily | Gracefully
