“It’s Something I Do…” for Practicing Adverbs of Manner

Are you looking for an engaging and interactive ESL game to help students practice adverbs of manner while encouraging critical thinking and speaking skills? The “It’s Something I Do…” activity is a perfect way to get students using adverbs naturally in sentences while having fun.

How to Play “It’s Something I Do…”

1️⃣ Prepare the Materials

  • Print and cut out a set of adverb cards for each pair of students.
  • Give each student a small piece of paper to write on.

2️⃣ Set Up the Pairs

  • Divide the class into pairs.
  • Place the adverb cards face down in a pile.

3️⃣ Writing the Activity

  • Player 1 picks an adverb card from the pile.
  • They must think of and write down an activity they do that matches the adverb.
  • Example:
    • Adverb card: badly
    • Activity: I sing badly.
  • The student then says, “It’s something I do badly.”

4️⃣ Guessing the Activity

  • Player 2 has five tries to guess what the activity is.
  • If the player guesses correctly:
    • 1st guess = 5 points
    • 2nd guess = 4 points
    • 3rd guess = 3 points
    • 4th guess = 2 points
    • 5th guess = 1 point
  • If the player does not guess correctly, no points are awarded.

5️⃣ Switch Roles and Keep Score

  • The players switch roles and continue playing.
  • The player with the highest score at the end wins!
