Jingle Bells and Learning Tales

Jingle Bells and Learning Tales

Procedure:

  1. Engaging Start: Begin with a circle time/TPR routine to set the festive mood.
  2. Interactive Song Activity: Play the song “Where’s Santa?” without audio. Students watch and complete a worksheet, ticking the images they see. Use the video to set context and identify gaps in their understanding.
  3. Vocabulary Presentation: Present target vocabulary (Santa, Reindeer, Sleigh, Presents, Christmas Tree, Bauble, Star, Stockings) through pictures and play receptive games like ‘Jump the line’ and ‘slap the board’ to check comprehension.
  4. Written and Oral Practice: Conduct activities where students match word cards to pictures using Pelmanism and Chopstick pick up. Provide a handout for a listening dictation, followed by writing the names of items. Students then create playing cards by cutting out the pictures.
  5. Oral Drill and Games: Drill the words orally before playing games like snap, merge packs, and ‘snatch the card’ for oral practice and recognition of target language.
  6. Song Review: Revisit the “Where’s Santa?” song, first without audio and later with audio. Students should now be able to identify more items in the video, reinforcing comprehension of target language.
  7. Interactive Song Freeze and Comprehension: Freeze the video at different points, prompting comprehension questions like “Where’s Santa?” or identifying items, encouraging students to respond orally.
  8. Reinforcing Language and Prepositions: Play a game of ‘Santa where are you?’ using flashcards depicting Santa in different places. Conduct activities such as a circle Q&A or Telephone for controlled oral practice of target vocabulary and grammar.
  9. Challenge for Higher Ability Classes: For higher ability classes, provide song lyrics with gaps for a gap-fill exercise. Alternatively, have students write down three presents and items for stockings, using the information for a guessing game.

This festive lesson not only introduces Christmas vocabulary but also reinforces prepositions and provides ample opportunities for both written and oral practice in an engaging manner!
