Children will:
- Learn about the concept of kids around the world.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about people around the world.
- Explore and apply the concepts of culture and customs..
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of kids around the world.
- Orally use words that describe people around the world.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about culture and customs.
- Use key concept words [world, country; culture, custom].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about kids around the world:
- Different people.
- Different countries.
- Different cultures.
- Different customs.
Model
Ask students: What are the people in the photo doing? (kids holding hands around a globe). Why are they holding hands? (to show that they help each other, get along, support each other, aren’t that different). Ask students: What is different when going to another country? (food, people, weather, clothes, language). Say: The world is a very big place with all kinds of different people. However, although people may look different and speak in a different language, we all have many things in common. What do you think we have in common? (we go to school, have homework, like to play, have responsibilities and chores).
Apply
Have students play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask students to talk about what other cultural things they know about. After the second game, have them discuss their favorite customs.
Close
Ask students: Do you know any kids that live around the world? Say: Although some of us may live really far away from each other, we aren’t that different. We can learn a lot from each other through our different cultures and customs. But, you will also find that sometimes we share similar customs and that our beliefs may be similar to someone else’s beliefs. If they are not, that is okay too because everyone is different. All we have to do is respect each other’s beliefs. Think about how you can be friends with kids around the world.
