Content Objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the concept of inventions.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about inventions and examples of inventions.
- Explore and apply the concept of inventions and some ways that kids can be inventors.
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of inventions.
- Orally use words that describe inventions.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about different kinds of inventions, and some ways that kids can be inventors.
- Use key concept words [machine, easier, travel, invention, inventor].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about inventions:
- Examples of things people have invented.
- Ways that kids can be inventors.
Model
Ask children: What do you see in this picture? (crayons, art stuff, etc.) Ask children: What is something you have made using these things? (a picture, a painting, etc.) Say: These are things we can use to make or invent things. Let’s learn about some of the inventions that people have made, and some of the ways that you can be an inventor. Would you like to be an inventor? (answers will vary).
Apply
Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about inventions that they use every day. After the second game, have them discuss the places they travel to.
Close
Ask children: What is an invention you have used today? Say: There are many kinds of inventions. As we learn about things people have invented, think about what kinds of things you can invent!
