Content Objectives
Children will:

- Access prior knowledge and build background about space.
- Explore and apply the concept of exploring space.
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of space.
- Orally use words that talk about space.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about exploring space.
- Use key concept words [space, planet, star, sun, moon, astronaut; expedition, spacecraft].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about space:
- What is space.
- Who goes to space.
- What do they do in space.
- What do they wear in space.
- Why do we go to space.
- How do we go to space.
Model
Ask children: What do you see in the photo? (planets, stars, Sun, Moon, Earth). How many planets do you see? (eight). Ask children: What are the names of the planets? (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). Say: Space is the place where all of the planets, stars, and moon are. A planet moves around the sun. There are nine planets that travel around the sun. The order of the planets starting with the one closest to the Sun is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. But, there is a debate about whether Neptune comes before Uranus. By exploring space, we are constantly learning new things such as Jupiter having four moons and most recently that there may be a 10th planet! What is the name of the planet with the rings around it? (Saturn).
Apply
Play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about what other preparations astronauts go through before going to space. After the second game, have them discuss the differences between the planets they’ve seen.

Ask children: What are the difficulties of space exploration? Say: Exploring space is extraordinary yet difficult at the same time. First of all, getting to space is tricky. The shuttle is boosted by rockets that contain many gases which could explode. Then, once you are there, the environment in space is different from the environment on Earth. In space, there is no gravity, like here on Earth, so the astronauts float around. That is why astronauts have to go through special training and wear special suits for protection. And coming back to space is also tricky because the Earth’s surface is very hot. A parachute helps the space shuttle to land. Think about other ways that being in space is different from being on Earth.
