Explain

Explain that children are going to learn about:

  • How things are built.
  • Building materials.
  • What is architecture.
  • What is an architect.

Model

Ask children: What do you see in this photo? (A boy sitting next to a sand castle.) What is this made of? (sand). Ask children: How do you think this boy made this sand castle? (answers will vary). Say: When we build something, we make something. In order to build something, you have to think about what you are going to use to build it and how you are going to build it. What would you like to build? (answers will vary).

Apply

Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about more things that are built and more things that are grown. After the second game, have them discuss ways to protect themselves when building something.

Close

Ask children: Do you think it is a good idea to work with others when building something? Why or why not? Say: It is a good idea to work with others when building something because building something takes a lot of time and work. You have to think about how you are going to build the project and what you are going to use to make it. Think about a time when you helped to build something.
