Thank You Letter: A Fun Christmas Activity for Students

Thank You Letter: A Fun Christmas Activity for Students

Objective:
This creative Christmas activity helps students practice writing, adjectives, and sentence structure. Students will write a thank you letter with the help of their classmates, where each student adds a new sentence to the letter. It encourages imagination, teamwork, and reinforces vocabulary in a fun, festive way.

Materials Needed:

  • One copy of the worksheet for each student.
  • Pen or pencil for writing.

Procedure:

Step 1: Introduction and Discussion
Start by asking the students what presents they received last Christmas and encourage them to describe them using adjectives. This will help them think of creative and descriptive language for the activity. For example, “I got a shiny red bicycle” or “I received a soft, cozy sweater.”

Step 2: Writing a Thank You Letter
Explain to the students that they are going to write a thank you letter for a present. Go through the letter structure with the class, making sure to elicit possible ways to complete the blank spaces, such as:

  • “Dear [Name],”
  • “Thank you for the [adjective] [present].”

Encourage them to think of adjectives to describe the gift, like “wonderful,” “sparkling,” or “gigantic.” You can also encourage them to be humorous or use unexpected gifts and famous personalities for fun.

Step 3: Getting Ready for the Activity
Hand out one worksheet to each student. Ask them to write their name at the top of the worksheet. They should then fold the paper so that the rest of the class cannot see what they have written.

Step 4: Passing the Worksheets
Now, have the students sit in a circle. Each student will pass their worksheet to the person on their right. The student receiving the worksheet will then complete the salutation, for example, “Dear Santa” or “Dear Superman.” After completing the salutation, they fold the paper again, making sure to cover what they wrote, and pass it to the next student.

Step 5: Continuing the Letter
Each student continues writing a sentence, alternating who writes what, until all the spaces in the letter are completed. This process can go as follows:

  • The first student writes the salutation.
  • The next student adds a sentence like, “Thank you for the amazing gift,” followed by adjectives to describe the gift.
  • The third student adds another sentence that could describe why the present is special or what they plan to do with it.
  • The process continues until all the blank spaces are filled.

Students should make sure to fold the paper after each sentence, ensuring no one can see what the others wrote before.

Step 6: Finalizing the Letter
Once the letter is completed, students should unfold the paper and read their finished thank you letter. This can result in amusing and creative letters, full of fun descriptions and imaginative scenarios.

Step 7: Review and Correction
After reading their letter, the student whose name is at the top of the paper should correct any mistakes (grammar, spelling, etc.) and then read the letter aloud to the class.

Example of a Completed Thank You Letter

Dear Wonder Woman,
Thank you for the huge, glittering diamond. It is so shiny that it almost blinded me! I’m going to use it to decorate my super-secret lair. It’s the best gift I’ve ever received. I love how it sparkles like a star.
Love,
Batman
