Animal survival
Content Objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the concept of animal survival.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about what animals need to survive.
- Explore and apply the concept by comparing and contrasting ways that different animals survive.
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of survival.
- Orally use words that describe different ways that animals survive.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about how animals survive.
- Use key concept words [teeth, claws, poison, hiding, camouflage, survival].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about:
- What survival means.
- What camouflage means.
- How animals defend themselves.
- How animals have special ways to survive.
Model
Ask children: What do you see that could help this animal survive? (armor, tough skin). How would it help this animal survive? (protection against predators). Proceed to the next slide. Ask children: How does camouflage help this animal survive? (it helps the animal hide, other animals can’t see it). Say: Animals need to find food to survive. They also need to protect themselves. What are some ways that animals can protect themselves? (hiding, camouflage, poison).
Apply
Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about how other animals survive and help the children learn more about the animals they are interested in. After the second game, have them discuss other hiding places that animals use.
Close
Ask children: What kind of animal has the best protection? Explain. Summarize for children that to survive means to live. Animals have special ways to protect themselves and to find food. Encourage children to think about if they would like to have the ability to camouflage themselves and why. | |
