Content Objectives
Children will:
- Learn about the concept of safety.
- Access prior knowledge and build background about things we can do to stay safe.
- Explore and apply the concept of why it is important to stay safe.
Language Objectives
Children will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of safety.
- Orally use words that describe ways to stay safe.
- Extend oral vocabulary by speaking about why it is important to stay safe.
- Use key concept words [biking, walking, helmet, street signs, safety, look both ways].
Explain
Explain that children are going to learn about:
- What safety means.
- Ways to stay safe.
- How to stay safe and have fun.
- Why it is important to stay safe.
Model
Ask children: What are the children in the photo doing? (riding bikes). How are the children staying safe? (wearing helmets, not biking on a busy street). Ask children: What rules do you follow to stay safe at home? (answers will vary). Say: We have rules that keep us safe in school. What are some of these rules? (walking in line, cleaning up, sharing).
Apply
Have children play the games that follow. Have them discuss with their partner the different topics that appear during the Talk About It feature. After the first game, ask children to talk about what could happen if we didn’t have rules to stay safe and help the children learn more about safety. After the second game, have them give examples of ways they stay safe while playing games or activities.
Close
Ask children: What other rules to stay safe do you think we should have in school? Explain. Summarize for children that we have many rules that keep us safe. These rules keep us from getting hurt. Encourage children to think about why we need rules in our community.
