Ideally, people who would like to learn a language will fine you easily once you become an online teacher, but until then, you might want to keep an eye on the many websites that offer online teaching opportunities.

These can be local or global. They can act as intermediaries for your services, or have their own teaching platform. They can ask you for a commission for each hour you teach,  or for each student that they find for you, or they can just be a free window to make yourself known on the web.

Preply

Preply is not just a language learning service. They offer over 100 subjects, including languages, school and university subjects, hobbies and art.

Through reviews written by current students and the teacher’s online profile, you can promote your language classes to new students. 

You do not need to have any specific qualifications. However, the detailed application process requires particular information on your experience certification. You can set and change your hourly rate at any time and you receive your earnings directly from the platform account to your bank card/account or via secure payment channels. Preply takes 100% commission on your first lesson payment for every new student. For all subsequent lessons, the commission varies from 33% to 18% per lesson, and depends on the number of lesson hours completed: the more hours taught the lower the commission percentage.

WyzAnt

WyzAnt offers to tutor students of all ages. Tutors create a WyzAnt profile, and students can review and select a tutor whose experience and price best fits their needs.

Tutors do not have to have teaching experience, however they must live in the United States and have a valid Social Security Number.

There are two ways to connect with students through Wyzant: apply for jobs on the Jobs Board or be contacted by students who find your profile. Once your registration is approved, your profile will become active and you’ll be ready to tutor any subject in which you’ve gained approval. All payments are processed through the Wyzant platform: Wyzant charges a fee for each lesson, according to the tutor’s hourly rate, plus 9% commision.

Verbling

Verbling connects you with students that want to learn a foreign language. You build your student base by posting a one to two minute introductory video as part of your profile.

Teachers are free to set their own hours and rates, and can often charge higher rates for languages that are in higher demand.

Be aware that the site takes 15% commission on your earnings. Also, teachers are only allowed to teach their native language. The selection process is quite long and not everybody is accepted, especially if you teach high-demanded languages such as English, Spanish, Italian or French.

Tutor.com

Established in 1998, Tutor.com is one of the pioneers of the online tutoring industry. All of their services are available live, on demand and online.

Mentoring services and tons of professional development materials make it ideal for those who may feel uncertain about the online teaching environment, and it provides a nice sense of community.

Language positions for K-12, college and adult education can be found here. German and Italian, in particular, have been marked as high-demand subjects on this platform. Although pay is low for those with no or little experience, opportunities for advancement exist. Even so, this site is better suited to those seeking a part-time rather than a full-time position. Note that this site often only accepts applications from the U.S., excluding New Mexico.

Chegg Tutors

Chegg Tutors provides an on-the-go app that allows you to connect with students quickly and conveniently. You can work with students at all levels of education (middle school, high school, and college), as well as professionals, and youncan teach all kinds of subjects. 

Unlike some other sites, you can tutor in more than one language if you wish, and you receive a bonus for tutoring in-demand subjects.

Your reputation on the site is largely dependent on student reviews. You get paid weekly by Chegg, that acts as a technology service that facilitates the provision of lesson services between students and tutors, and does not make decisions related to the provision. This website is only based in the USA.

Connections Academy

An offshoot of the educational tech giant Pearson, Connections Academy  is a free to use website, that provides a complete virtual school experience, including licensed school counselors, and college and career planning services.

Many language teaching positions on this site are adjunct or part-time, but there are some full-time jobs.

Available positions are categorised by state, so different opportunities may exist depending on where you live. As an educator through Connections Academy, you’ll receive training in all relevant teaching tools and software for delivering successful online classes. Salaries are calculated with a competitive base compensation with higher salaries given based on degrees, years of experience and certification. It is only based in the USA.

mYngle

mYngle, one of the oldest and most well-known language learning sites, based in the Netherlands, is often used by businesses who want their employees to build skills in a particular language. Teachers, or “coaches” as they call them, must be native speakers.

You can set your own rates, and experienced, high-quality teachers are encouraged to set their prices to reflect the quality of their teaching.

One potential obstacle to note: if your language is not in high demand, you may have to be on a waiting-list for a while, before getting students.

Skooli

Skooli is Teach Away’s online tutoring platform that connects students with online tutors. You can accept sessions at the times that suit you. Students can schedule sessions in advance or request instant help if you’re online. You need to apply to Skooli and wait for their approval; they require a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in your teaching field, or a government issued teaching license.

Tutors earn an hourly rate which is based on qualifications and experience. You are paid for the time you spend in the classroom and are eligible for your pay once a session has been completed. 

As soon as you have reached a minimum of US $100 in earnings, you can request a payout for the outstanding amount through PayPal.

BuddySchool

BuddySchool has some of the widest options for language teaching, with dozens of languages supported. Here, teachers create their own ads to recruit students. You have the option of creating a paid ad to get more attention and visibility.

Getting started is easy: you just create a free account, complete your teacher profile, availability and fee(s).

Because teaching on BuddySchool can be competitive, positive student reviews are critical to your success. Students pay for each lesson in advance and you can send a withdrawal request 24 hours after the lesson is finished. You’ll receive your money within 1 business day, paid to your PayPal account.

ITALKI

Italki is a global language learning platform that pairs students and teachers for 1-to-1 online language lessons around the world. The site offers more than 130 languages. The site is very selective, so the application process is lengthy, and requires your active participation. You can become a Professional Teacher or a Community Tutor. The first is a native or near-native speaker who is professionally certified or experienced in teaching a language as a foreign or second language, while the latter doesn’t require any experience. Italki charges 15% commission on all financial transactions between teachers and students.You are only charged when you teach a session. Competition is high and as a consequence you can find colleagues offering classes as low as 6$ an hour.

iTutorgroup

iTutorGroup connects teachers from across the globe to students in Asia. Through their online platforms, students have access to teaching consultants worldwide, 24-7. They include several teaching platforms such as TutorABC or TutorMing mainly for Chinese students.

Their minimum requirements are a bachelor’s degree or higher, TESOL/TEFL/TESL certificate (or equivalent), at least one year recognized teaching experience and a commitment of 5 peak hours per week.

The payment consists of three components: Base Pay, Completion Bonus and Contribution Bonus. Teachers are rewarded progressively through achieving higher levels of tenure. As you reach different levels in tenure, you will be locked into a higher guaranteed bonus per session. You will also raise the rate further each month by teaching more sessions.

All you have to do is submit your profile and once it’s been approved, you get an easy-to-use booking and invoicing system to manage your clients. Every major language in the world is represented.

goFLUENT

This site specialises in English, Italian, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese courses for international business professionals. Their platform advertises current available positions and asks you to send a resume or a CV in response to these.

As with most of these sites, you create your own schedule.

Full-time teaching on goFLUENT can be very profitable as long as you don’t mind losing pay during vacations, public holidays and times when you’re unavailable. Applicants must be native speakers, usually with business or corporate experience.

Teach Away

Teach Away mostly prides itself on offering the latest teaching jobs and matching experienced teachers with international schools all over the world. However, besides offering plenty of opportunities to live and teach in international cities, it also provides frequent postings of online teaching vacancies for many subjects.

It is only for native English-speaking graduates based in North America.

ESL jobs can be either full-time or part-time. The types of ESL teaching jobs available for all levels of education: preschool, elementary, middle-school, high-school, college and adult. Bare in mind that Teach Away prioritises educators who have classroom teaching experience.
